Inspirational weight-loser David takes on the London Marathon
written by Crimestoppers on the 20th April 2017 at 12:16

32-year-old David Smith from Poole works for Barclays Bank, and also volunteers as a Special Constable with the police. He’s managed to shed a remarkable seven stone in recent years, and has chosen to run this Sunday’s London Marathon, fundraising for Crimestoppers. Here he answers a couple of quick questions for us…

Q. What made you decide to take on the famously gruelling London Marathon?

It was three years ago that I found I couldn’t buy clothes in the high street, and I used to get tired out just from walking around.

I thought ‘enough is enough’.

Q. How do your friends and relatives feel about your challenge?

Family and friends have been very supportive, especially with preparing for the big day in London. Some think I’m being a bit crazy and are quite shocked, but it’s worth it.

I’m grateful for their support whilst fundraising – and would also like to thank Barclays for matching my fundraising effort pound-for-pound.

Q. What made you choose Crimestoppers as your fundraising cause?

I volunteered for around 1,000 hours last year with the police, mostly with the traffic department.

It made me realise that Crimestoppers, whilst separate, plays a valuable role in giving the public another way to help tackle crime.

Q. Have you got a target finish time for the Marathon?

I’m hoping to complete the course in 4 hours and 30 minutes…

Q. What would you say to inspire others to take on their own challenge?

Now, with a lot of hard effort, I’ve realised that you can do anything if you put your mind to it.
